Fukov
Fukov (also 'Fukoff') or, more formally, Mr. Fukov was a character appearing in Star Wreck.
Biography[edit | edit source]
Nothing is known about Fukov prior to his joining P-Fleet. He was of Russian descent and, by his own admission, did not "speek English".
Upon joining P-Fleet, Fukov was assigned to the crew of the USS Kickstart, to the position of Tactical Officer, running the ship's various systems - mainly its weapons - as well as piloting it and running various chores for its captain.
Under Pirk's command, Fukov took part in the Kickstart's five-month mission, completing an assignment on Mynos 3, and fighting Plingons in Earth's orbit and in the Fibula sector. With the destruction of the Kickstart in the latter, Fukov was among the few crew to survive and travel to a friendly space station, boarding the new ship, the CPP Kickstart-2, where he continued performing his duties.
Two years later the Kickstart received orders to investigate a suspected Romuclan base on Vega 3. Arriving to the planet, Fukov was assigned to the away team, piloting the space sled and operating the manual generator that allowed Pirk to tap into the Romuclan commander's sub-pace communications. Just then a Romuclan Warturkey had arrived into the system and discovered the away team, requiring it to flee back to the Kickstart. When things got heated, Pirk ordered that Mr. Spook and himself be beamed to the ship, while Fukov was left behind, as - according to Pirk - the sled was "too expensive to waste". As soon as the Kickstart began firing back at the Warturkey, the Romuclans Twisted from the system, requiring the Kickstart to pursue them, dragging Fukov's sled behind using the sucking beam. In pursuit through turbospace, Pirk ordered a light ball be fired at the Romuclan ship, but seeing as how it lacked the required Twist inertia, the light ball flew into the sled instead, damaging its Twist core.
After destroying the Romuclan ship, the Kickstart was ordered to fly to the Gamma Sector P-Fleet outpost that the Romuclans were planning to attack, to defend it. After the Romuclans had arrived to the Outpost the a huge battle broke out between them and the P-Fleet forces. In order to outmanoeuvre the enemy the Kickstart split its battle and saucer sections, the latter of which being left to Fukov, to pilot. As the battle section fought against several Romuclan ships, the saucer section was being chased around by a lone Romuclan Warturkey. Fukov attempted to fight it, but failed and died when the Warturkey returned fire. This was recorded in his personal blog. He was later given a funeral.
Personality and traits[edit | edit source]
Fukov was a timid, clumsy, and dim-witted person. While not particularly hard-working, he aimed to please Captain Pirk, who was all to happy to give him various chores or leave him in harm's way. At most, Fukov would express his disagreement, but would still do as ordered. According to Pirk, "a weapons officer must never think", which, he figured, must have been the reason as to why Fukov was so good at his job. At the same time, Fukov seemed to have had high physical resistance, as he was able to successfully complete several physically-demanding assignments in spite of his sub-par fitness - according to Mr. Spook - and survived breathing antimaterial gas for fifteen minutes straight seemingly without any side-effects.
Trivia[edit | edit source]
- Fukov seems to be a loose parody of Pavel Chekov of Star Trek.
- It is possible that Fukov was gay. Speaking in favour of this are his stereotypically timid demeanour, the fact that he wore a purple shirt, and had a pierced right ear. While none of these are indicative of homosexuality, of course, the character was created back in the 1990's when homosexuality was less accepted and less understood. An additional argument in favour of Fukov's homosexuality is that he's apparently had a fondness for Pirk, expressing it in a way that made Pirk uncomfortable to the point of threatening Fukov with violence in the event the he should try anything.
- Fukov's blunders and Pirk's angry "FUKOOOV!!!" outbursts have become a running gag in the series, even affecting Fukov's alternate timeline equivalent.
- In the Star Wreck RPG Fukov's rank is listed as 'Ensign'.
